Olympians Appeal on Iran to Halt Execution of Boxing Champion

More than two dozen Olympic medallists, coaches and additional international athletes have put their names to a statement calling for a stop to the execution of a boxing champion and trainer, who is on death row in Iran.

Growing Global Anger

Amid rising international outrage over the nation's increasing application of capital punishment as a tool of repression, the forcefully phrased statement denounces the government's verdict to uphold the execution order of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

The boxer, thirty, from Mashhad in north-east Iran, was taken into custody for participating in countrywide demonstrations in the year 2019 and charged of aiding an resistance movement. He has spent five years in incarceration, where he has been abused and confined in solitary confinement.

“Athletics is intended to inspire faith, solidarity, and bravery,” the endorsers wrote. “The execution of a titleholder for his beliefs is a direct assault on these values and a warning to every athlete who dares to voice opinions.

History of Putting to Death Competitors

The appeal noted that the boxer's circumstances was part of a pattern and highlighted Iran’s past of executing competitors for their convictions, such as Habib Khabiri, skipper of the football side, and Fourouzan Abdi, leader of the female volleyball side. In the year 2020, Navid Afkari, a 27-year Iranian competitor, faced the death penalty.

Other endorsers to the letter include Tracy Edwards, who skippered the inaugural women's squad in a international sailing event and was the pioneering lady to earn a renowned nautical honor; the former leader of the national squad Craig Foster; and Bahram Mavaddat, who was in the country's selection for the global tournament.

Detention and Unjust Proceedings

Vafaei Sani was detained in early 2020. The charges against him comprised “causing deterioration on Earth through fire-setting and destruction of public property”. His ruling has been annulled multiple times but on 4 October it was maintained on the latest review. His trial was criticized as “grossly unfair” by human rights activists and groups.

Appeal to UN

The urging to prevent Vafaei Sani’s execution is subsequent to a 2023 letter to the global human rights chief for human rights, endorsed by more than one hundred rights specialists and groups, calling for action to prevent the sports figure's death.

Capital Punishment Escalation

As per reports, there is an “death penalty surge in Iran, which has reached shocking levels”. In 2023, officials executed at least eight hundred fifty-three people – a forty-eight percent surge on 2022. Last year, statistics showed 972 capital punishments, marking the maximum count since the year 2015. More than hundreds of people have been put to death so far in the current year.

Political prisoners and dissidents are focus, notably in the aftermath of the 2022 protests. Specialists say the Iranian authorities have employed the death penalty to quell opposition, instil anxiety among the public and tighten their hold on authority.
