Former Rider Derek Gee Faces 30 Million Euro Damages Claim After Contract Ending Over 'Personal Belief'

Canadian cyclist Derek Gee has revealed he faces a massive damages claim totaling €30 million by his previous squad, Israel-Premier Tech. This comes after his choice to end his contract based on what he described as "personal beliefs."

Race Exit and Key Motivations

Gee, aged 28, who finished fourth overall at this year’s Giro d’Italia, departed from his team shortly before the Vuelta a España in September. That race was subject to extensive pro-Palestinian protests linked to the conflict in Gaza.

"I terminated my contract with just cause, as is every person’s right if they cannot to continue performing their duties under the existing circumstances," Gee explained on his social media accounts.

He emphasized that his choice was carefully considered and came after an irreparable relationship with the team's leader, in addition to major worries related to racing for the team from safety and ethical perspective. These issues deeply affected his conscience, he mentioned.

Official Stance and Ongoing Case

The team informed Reuters they were unable to comment on the matter since the dispute is currently before the arbitration panel of cycling's governing body, the sport’s governing body. The news agency has also contacted the UCI for their input.

Gee acknowledged that departing from the team left him without a contract or protection if he were injured, but added this was a chance he accepted as he could no longer keep competing for the team.

Massive Claim and Team Changes

"I understand the team has a different view," Gee continued. "However, I now confront what I understand to be a financial demand reportedly over approximately €30m – for doing nothing more than exercising my fundamental rights as an athlete and individual."

He shared that this situation strengthens my belief that departing the squad was the right decision, despite the recent announcement about rebranding and cosmetic structural shifts.

The basis is uncertain what the 30 million euro claim covers. Riders typically earn only a fraction of that amount during their racing years.

In related news, Israel–Premier Tech stated earlier this week that the team would undergo a full rebrand for the 2026 season, distancing themselves from their current Israeli branding after more than a decade.
